The first insight came from the workshop realized by Sirap and the Master of Strategic Design in 2019.

82% of the total leakage of plastic waste entering the oceans comes from Asia. Ocean-Bound plastic is all mismanaged plastic waste generated in areas near the coasts, which is bound to end up in the ocean.

So, by using this material from a supplier that could guarantee its sourcing, we could help to stop its flow into the ocean before it ever got there. Supporting communities in need, giving them a valuable output for their waste while diverging the plastic from the Oceans. Stimulating the local economy and making their communities cleaner.

To tackle this issue we realized an extensive Green Procurement to partner with a supplier that could provide us with ethically sourced Ocean Bound flakes with guaranteed full traceability.

Having such a strong message attached to this material, the product would need to communicate a lot to the final customer. Being a European Group, Sirap, had to do it across borders, languages, and cultures, with a universal message.

That was the premiss for the Ocean’s brand and naming, followed by its translation into shape. The design of the flagship packaging for the brand mimics the sea surface with wavelike curves, communicating its history without words. Everything was tied together with a commercial strategy currently in place.

The project got recognized with the Italian Confindustria award for Best Performer of the Circular Economy.
